FYI:
Knob and Tube is an old two wire system where lights, plugs and receptacles are not grounded.
From 1880’s it was widely used through the 1930’s. In some locations installed into the late 1950’s. Years ago there were few electrical appliances, electricity usage and loads were limited. K&T was the best and only option.
The wires were spliced and soldered together inside walls, without junction boxes and then wrapped with electrical tape. Wiring was rubber and cloth covered #14 copper mounted on porcelain Knobs nailed to the wood studs and joists. When required to pass through the wood, porcelain Tubes were inserted in holes with the conductors inside. Knob and Tube wiring therefore never touched the wood structure or plaster. Heat from load or overload dissipated in the air space between rafters and partitions. These circuits originally could be fused by 20 Amp plug fuses. Do not use fuses or breakers over 15 Amp today.
Visual inspection of conductors and splices can determine state of K&T integrity nowadays. Conductors with bare or dry, crumbling or stiff insulation should be replaced. These conditions resulted from over-current, shorts, improper fusing, or high temperatures. Problems are usually found in switch, plug, and junction boxes, in attics, furnace or boiler rooms and especially above the lights.
K&T circuit extensions and additional loads should be avoided. Splicing new wires and K&T is not advisable. Overusing over 15 Amp is dangerous.
When installed correctly Knob and Tube wiring suspended in the air could carry higher current without overheating. It's a single K&T advantage over the contemporary wiring. Knob and tube wiring, on its own, is not inherently a problem. Wiring that has deteriorated or been abused is.
A SINGLE WORST KNOB & TUBE MISTAKE is hiring a handyman or a renovator to replace, remove, or repair your wiring. It's like placing with your own hands ticking bombs into walls and ceiling
All handymen and even some electricians do the job faster by cutting corners. A renovator would replace just visible pieces of the K&T or splice/connect wires without junction boxes. Temptation is very strong and there is no risk to lose "the handyman's license"
Splicing without installing one junction box could save handyman from one hour to three hours and instantly make him $40 - $90. What if handymen could not resist such an enticement and what if they did not install 20 boxes? It's easy to hide and impossible to detect. This and other tricks would save them 60% - 70% of time and create an even higher risk of fire than before the replacement. Homeowners end up with the incorrectly installed new wiring, which is much more dangerous comparing to the old knob and tube
That is why a handyman, renovator, general contractor, and even a licensed electrician is not allowed to do electrical work in Toronto
Only a Licensed Electrical Contractor and ironically you, the owner/occupant of a single dwelling unit (if it's also a fully detached house) could legally handle the electrical work in Ontario
You would face a fine, forfeit your insurance, put yourself and others at risk of fire if you allowed a handyman or even a general contractor to do the wiring
Always check name/picture against Electrical Contractor & driver licenses and call licensure at 1-877 372-7233 then 1, then 3 to verify the contractor's license
Understandably, licensed and honest electrical contractor could not compete in price with such handymen. But, of course you get what you pay for at the end of the day
The very least you should do is inviting an Electrical Contractor for advice, inspection and consultation on how to do knob and tube rewiring correctly. And do not forget to get a permit and pass the ESA inspection. You would pay a little extra and save yourself from that ticking bomb

Beware! Wiring in a building must only be done using an aluminum armored cable - BX. Using BX makes the wiring job much more difficult and time consuming
All handymen and some electricians use a regular (white plastic) Romex wire instead. The code strictly prohibits that due to fire hazard. Don't put the entire condo building population in danger!

Interested in pot lights installation in a condo?
Condo potlight installation into a hollow drop ceiling
or
A bulkhead is built around a solid concrete ceiling perimeter with potlights inside
Before I can give an estimate for a condo could you pls answer these Qs?
- If the building is 15 yr old or more, what does the wall/ceiling plaster consist of: one layer of drywall, two or more layers of drywall?
- How many pot lights in how many rooms do you need? (pls give the list of rooms and number of potlights per room)
- Is free daytime parking available without difficulty and without time limit at your place or within 20 meters?
- Is there a ceiling light installed or an existing ceiling junction box in each room?
- When do you need the job done? Within days, weeks?
- Is an additional switch installation required?
- How high is the ceiling in each room?
It's impossible to install a recessed switch or receptacle if the depth of drywall + studs is not deep enough It's impossible to install a recessed switch box or receptacle onto a concrete wall It's impossible to run a wire inside the concrete wall if there is no drywall It's only possible to run an exposed wire on top of the concrete wall It's impossible to install junction box into the concrete ceiling It's impossible to install pot lights into the concrete ceiling
Please make sure that ceiling in each room where you want pot lights installed is a hollow drop ceiling And that the distance from the drop ceiling up to a concrete structure above is more than 7" FYI: 7" is the height of the pot light itself
Ask your building manager about the ceiling and walls Please reply with your address or just a postal code And indicate a number of lights in each room
Home Electrical Inspection
Electrical Inspections for insurance purposes
General Property Electrical Inspection
Knob and Tube Inspection, Aluminum Wiring Electrical Inspections in Toronto
Renovation Electrical Inspections in Toronto (before the ESA inspection)
Some insurance companies require a certificate of inspection from a qualified electrician in addition to the Building Home Inspection report
This is especially the case for homes built prior to 1950 for the Knob and Tube wiring concerns and for homes built from the mid 1960's to the early 1970's for the safety issues associated with Aluminum Electrical Wiring
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission research shows that "Homes wired with aluminum wire manufactured before 1972 are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach Fire Hazard Conditions than are homes wired with copper. Post 1972 aluminum wire is also a concern."
We perform:
-Property electrical inspection
-Building electrical system inspection -Overall electrical system assessments
-Electric inspection requested for insurance -House electrical system inspection to check its condition -Electric safety inspection to reduce your insurance premiums
-Inspection to uncover safety concerns and to evaluate the cost of repairs
-Express Electrical inspection for Toronto Real Estate, Insurance agents and homebuyers
Our certified by a Licensed Electrician Inspection Report could greatly reduce home owner's insurance premiums
If Knob and Tube or Aluminum Wiring is present we check its condition and advise you on the best possible action. We also give you a cost estimate and options of eliminating the problem ranging from a few hundred dollar repair to complete replacement of the old wiring
We also help you to collect formal opinions from authorities and experts showing that Knob and Tube is not a fire hazard in itself. It's poor condition is. We will help you to find an insurance company, which accepts Knob and Tube properties and does not rip you off at the same time
Inspection from a qualified electrician is an inexpensive insurance that gives you a peace of mind and/or information necessary to make the right decision

Certified by a Licensed Electrician Inspection Report Toronto Electrical Contractor Certificate Inspection by a qualified electrician
Our inspection is not a substitute for the ESA inspection
If you are planning to, are in the process of, or any electrical work has already been done on your property, you must get a permit and inspection from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) at 1 (877) 372-7233. But we can always have a look and informally point out the electrical problems and code violations before you call the ESA.
